AFM#15: It Reads Better Upside Down: Event Report
Thanks to all those who made it out to AFM#15; ‘It Reads Better Upside Down’. We were lucky enough to get great weather for this friday evening event and a rough estimate puts the numbers at around 80-100 making it our biggest flashmob to date. If you didn’t make it out to this flashmob but are curious about the event, I suggest you check out the event instructions to find out what we did.
We will have a full event report and video up soon. In the meantime we’d love to get your comments and feedback on how the event went. Simply post them in the comments below.
We’d especially like to know:
- Any funny reactions you saw or got from passers by, employees or other non-mobbers
- Which mob activity you like the best and why
- Any activity/s you didn’t like and/or ways they could’ve been improved
- Any ideas for future flashmobs and events

I thought the whole event was very creative.
However the fourth flashmob outside the myer centre felt very disorganized, as though people didn’t really know what to do.
People seemed unsure about who they were meant to change, how long they were meant to stay for and how serious they were meant to be about the event.
Also, it seemed that everyone was more or less there for shits and giggles and not being very serious about the whole event. However, this was only my first flashmob, I’m not sure if that’s the general idea or if it is meant to be a serious public disturbance.

Great turn out. One of the biggest yet?
1) I thought it worked pretty well. Borders was packed, and I overheard some of the staff freaking out a little. But it worked out. Maybe if we had tried to be a little quieter and a little more inconspicuous it would’ve been just that little more subtle.
2) The countdown was awesome, and the sheer size of the group was great. A friend overheard the cops say “I bet they’re preachers or something” when we first started forming up. Haha!
3) Shoe laces was good. Some people got a little creative with what they were doing. I have to hand it to the Harris Scarfe’s spruiker, he always gets the raw deal, but takes it in his stride. We should get him something sometime to say thanks for being a good sport.
4) Even if the statues was a bit disorganised, I thought it was good fun. As someone being posed, it was interesting to just be manipulted by people. I loved how the guy from one of the shops (man to man?) brought out a manikin to join in. Plenty of onlookers. I think we could have initiated another countdown so that people knew when to move on – but otherwise, it was good.
Good times, great turn out. Looking forward to future mobs.

Flashmob 1 worked pretty well. People started entering borders at probably 5 to 6 – so we were doing alright for time. The reactions of those shopping legitimately were just confused.
The countdown worked really well, but we didn’t really know when to start at 20 – I only joined in when it got to 10.
Harris Scarfe’s shoelaces worked well. Again, the spruiker was trying really hard to heckle us – one of my mates offered to tie his shoes and he said “nah, another girl fixed me up before, and fixed me on the way up if you know what I mean” – clever!
The statues were disorganized but some great poses and photos came out of it.

I think that everything was 100% hilarious. I admit, me and my friends did turn up for shits and giggles, but the sheer amount of people there was just awesome! The spruiker was really funny, he said to me as I tied my shoe “Can you polish me up while your down there?” And i laughed at his serious looking face. Mob #2 was the best in my opinion because of all the people surrounding us were just like WTF?
Just a suggestion, maybe next time we can go up and down the escalators in borders or somewhere.. maybe?
It’s a shame we didn’t get any photos of Mob 1 or 2

How about a flashmob at the opening of the Outsiders Festival
(1-30 November)
The opening is on 1 November at 1pm
at the West Torrena Auditorium
1 Brooker Terrace, Hilton
Entry: gold coin donation.
As a suggestion – everybody enters the auditorium at 1 pm and looks at the paintings for twenty minutes, then listens to the opening speech and watches the performances, then everybody goes home after purchasing a painting.

Hey I always thought of maybe having a future Flash mob in an elevator like a party at a certain floor then al of a sudden when you reach another floor then stop and walk away like nothing happened?

hey guys,
myself and a few mates would like to join the next one….just an idea. everyone meeting at the intersection at the end of rundall mall (hungry jacks end). once the pedestrian lights go red, one person opens a black umbrella(opposite HJ’s), and everyone runs to him(with umbrellas) and forms a spartan 300 style wall(facing HJ direction), once the pedestrian light goes green we begin to slowly move as a group. in the middle of the intersection someone yells stop, the group stops and pumps their umbrella 3 times, then keeps moving. once cross we disburse. what you think?

Um, I heard there was another event already organised but it seems to be deleted off of Facebook and/or rescheduled. Something to do with a song from Wicked?
