The Event: 30 Seconds of Fame

The Idea: Giving random people their time (brief) in the lime light.

Who: There will be something for everyone to do and plenty of room for creativity.

Whats Involved: We camp outside a predetermined shop and nominate a target ‘Celebrity’ as they enter.  While they’re inside we quickly set up the outside of the shop as if its a red carpet affair complete with Security, Media and screaming fans.  When the target exits we give them the full celebrity treatment: Security escort, cameras flashing away, fans screaming, gasping and asking for autographs and anything else you can think of to make the moment.  After 30 seconds is up we quickly pack up and disperse and prepare for the next target.

We hope everyone can really get into this event.  Get creative!  Raid your wardrobe for costumes and props.  Heres some ideas to get you started:

Photographers

Usually we encourage photographers to be discreet when taking photos at our events but the opposite is true here.  The bigger the camera the better!  Flash photography is encouraged.  How about laminated press passes?

Security

Security will need to look the part with black or grey suits… and maybe dark sunglasses too.

Reporters

News reporter/ camera man teams encouraged, this could be your big scoop!  Newspaper reporters with notepads and pens.

Fans

Can you scream? We Want You!  Make lots of noise, ask for autographs, hold up signs ‘We Love You,’ take photos and video on your phones.

DATE: January 9th, 2011

TIME: 12:00pm – 3:00pm
WHERE: Meet at Hindmarsh Square in the city, we’ll finish up at Glenelg.

The Annual No Pants Ride is here once again. As usual, we’ll be joining thousands of people all across the globe on this epic day! The idea’s simple: People on the Glenelg Tram are going to be surprised when people with no pants on get on the tram at stops all along the way to Glenelg.

Here’s how it works:

1) Meet at Hindmarsh Square where we’ll split everyone up into groups and give each group a certain tram stop to get off/get on at

2) Everyone make their way to the Rundle Mall tram stop (fully clothed!!)
We’ll all catch the same tram heading towards Glenelg

3) Just before your group’s stop, take your pants off, put them in your bag and get off the tram

4) Wait for the next tram to come along and board it

5) When you’re on the tram – with no pants – it’s important that we pretend that nothing’s out of the ordinary.

6) When we arrive at Glenelg, we’ll head straight for the beach. Make your way to the Jetty where we’ll be taking a few group shots and handing out a bunch of prizes to people (e.g. Best Socks and Jocks Combo, Best Straight Face and more!)

Now, if you’re thinking that there’s no way you’re going to ride the tram pants-less consider this… Improv Everywhere run this event every year in New York and last time they managed to get over 3000 people, That’s Right OVER THREE THOUSAND, to go pants-less and for them its the middle of winter. In the Aussie summer going pants-less is actually more comfortable than wearing pants.

The idea behind a rickroll: someone clicks on a link expecting one thing, but ending up at a vid of Rick Astley singing Never Gonna Give You Up. We’re going to translate this by setting up situations where people will interact with a flashmobber, expecting one thing, then suddenly a group of people will be singing Never Gonna Give You Up!

WHEN & WHERE: We’ll be meeting at 2:00pm at Hindmarsh Square to run through how it’s all going to play out exactly, but below you’ll get the idea of what we’re up to!

There will be three stages to this event, with a number of flashmobs as part of each stage. For each stage, we will have a designated [Rick Astley] who will lead the event. They will be responsible for starting the song (singing the verse solo) and everyone else will come in with a condensed version of the song.

LEARN THE SONG:

unless you want to be one of the Rick Astley Solos, you only need to know the chorus and bridge!

This will be full of win.

Here’s a run down on the different stages:

RICK ASTLEY, THE STATUE BUSKER
You know those buskers in Rundle Mall that pretend to be statues and only move when you give them money? Disperse around a spot we pick for our busker. We’ll have our Rick Astley as still as a statue with some giant novelty dice at his feet with a sign saying ‘roll me.’ when someone rolls the dice, they’ll start singing. After the song, we’ll all disperse again and wait for the next person to roll the dice (we’ll do this three or four times).

RICK ASTLEY, THE PHOTOGRAPHER
You know those people who ask people who ask others to take photos of them? Disperse around one of the Rundle Mall landmarks. We’ll have our Rick Astley ask people to take photos of them with an iconic Rundle Mall landmark. When the person is about to take the photo, they’ll start singing. After the song, we’ll all disperse again and head to the next landmark (Pigs, Malls Balls, Fountain).

RICK ASTLEY, THE CUSTOMER
You know those people who go into shops and buy stuff? Disperse through the designated store. We’ll have our Rick Astley head to the front counter of a store once they’ve looked around a bit and when the shop assistant serves them, they’ll start singing. After the song, we’ll all disperse and head to the next shop (the shops will be announced on the day).

As usual, at the end of the flashmob, we’ll head to City Cross arcade for fooooood

QUEST FOR JACKIE CHAN INSTRUCTIONS!!!

CLOTHES: wear blue jeans and a black tank top/t-shirt (or as close to that as you can) we’ll have some masks for people on the day, but if you could print your own, that would be great!

GEAR: The more photos and footage of this event, the better! So feel free to bring your cameras

MEETING PLACE: Hindmarsh Square (South East corner diagonally opposite the park with the skeleton sculpture)

First, meet at Hindmarsh Square where we’ll briefly run through the mobs as there are going to be a few new people to this event, then we’ll head to Rundle Mall for the rest of the activities.

Mob #1: Chan Cheers (Chibo Cheers)
Make sure we’re all spread out around the Cibo in Rundle Mall with masks off (near the fountain and Reject Shop). Once we’re all in place, we’ll be watching for people buying coffees. Once some goes up to order a coffee, we’ll rush in with masks on and start a clap and a circular mexican wave while chanting “Jackie, Jackie, Jackie, Jackie…Chaaaaaan!”

Mob # 2: Follow that Chan!
Keep an eye out for the leader who will pick someone walking down the Mall and we’ll ghost them. Stay alert, because we’ll be switching people/direction a few times. We’ll finish out the front of the Myer Centre where we’ll all disperse for our next mob.

Mob # 3: Shopping Chan-nel: Do you have night vision goggles?
Head into the Myer Centre (masks off) – we don’t want to spook the security guys. Head to AUSTRALIAN GEOGRPAHIC in SMALL GROUPS OR PAIRS on the ground floor. Wander around the store and talk to each other while looking around, getting louder and louder. By the time everyone is in the store, it should be really loud. Keep an eye out for Ben, who will go to the front counter and ask “Do you have any night vision goggles?” (they don’t), when the say “no” we’ll all suddenly go quiet, put our masks on, stare at the shop assistant and walk out of the shop, and head to the front of the Myer Centre and disperse for the next mob.

Mob # 4: PhotoChan
Disperse around the front of the Myer (masks off), we’ll be on the move, so try to keep an eye on where everyone is, but make sure you have enough distance so we don’t draw attention to ourselves.

Keep an eye out for people taking photos around the Mall (usually around the Mall’s Balls or the Pigs) once we see someone setting up for a photo, we’ll quickly rush in, put on our masks and join in on the photo, making V (peace) symbols with our fingers.

Finally, head to the City Cross food court for food!!
